Cold / Flush

The cold and flu can be uncomfortable for anyone, but especially for children as they may not always be able to say how they are affected the same way adults can. Fortunately, at Star Life Pediatrics, both the cold and flu can be easily diagnosed within our office with immediate results allowing us to treat your child the same day and give them the care they need.

What is a cold?
A cold is from a virus that may cause upper respiratory symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, nasal and sinus congestion, and a sore throat. Though uncommon, a cold can be accompanied by a slight fever. Colds generally last anywhere from 7 to 10 days.

What is the flu?
The flu is caused by a specific influenza virus. As with a cold, the flu will also affect your child’s upper respiratory system causing similar symptoms. In addition to congestion, sore throat, runny nose and other symptoms of a cold, your child may experience fatigue, body aches, chills, and a loss of appetite. The flu is often accompanied by a high fever that can persist if left untreated. The flu can last anywhere from one to several weeks.

Treatment
Although there is no cure for the cold or flu, we can still provide treatment options to help your child find relief.

Over the counter medication can help reduce a fever and relieve aches and pains associated with being sick from the cold and flu. A humidifier can also add extra moisture into the air to alleviate nasal and sinus congestion. At home, it is important to keep your child hydrated and allow them to get as much rest as possible.

Antiviral medication may be prescribed to your child to help them recover faster. Before prescribing any medication, our doctors will discuss any potential side effects with you.

The best way to prevent the flu is to schedule yearly flu shots for your child and family. The shot will only take a few minutes of your time but will protect you for an entire year.

For more information on the cold and flu, please contact our office at (732) 910-1312.

Immunizations

Our mission here at Star Life Pediatrics, is to help your child experience a happy, healthy life. While we do encourage the development of a strong immune system, we recommend vaccinating your child to reduce their risk of contracting contagious diseases that could be life-threatening.

In addition to annual flu vaccinations, we provide the recommended vaccinations for the following conditions:

  • Polio
  • Mumps
  • Measles
  • Meningitis
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Whooping cough
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)

Should you be traveling to a country outside of the United States, consult with your child’s pediatrician as additional vaccinations may be recommended depending on where you are traveling.

Most vaccinations can be administered during a well child exam.

Virtual Visits

Here at Star Life Pediatrics, we are always looking for new ways to improve our patient experience. We understand that it is not always possible for you and your little ones to come into our office for a visit, so we have taken the appropriate steps to give you better access to the quality care you deserve.

With the help of telemedicine we are able to bring our services to you, overcoming the barriers of time, distance, and even illness so that you have access to your provider when you need it most.

Telemedicine allows us to deliver a unique consultation experience to you remotely using HIPAA compliant video conferencing tools. This service allows you to connect to your provider with ease in a timely manner, and is designed with the patient in mind to be very user-friendly. Virtual consultations can be done using devices that most patients have easy access to such as a smartphone or a computer with a built-in video camera, so you won’t need to worry about having any specialized equipment.

Using our telemedicine service is simple, and our friendly staff would be happy to answer any questions you may have about utilizing this service prior to your appointment.

During your virtual consultation, you will be able to reap all the same benefits of an in-office visit without the wait time, hassle, and risk of spreading germs that comes with physically being in the office.

Nearly every aspect of your care can be handled virtually, including direct access to your provider, remote medical diagnosis, and education on prevention and treatment options. We will even handle the payment virtually, so you won’t have to worry about coming into the office or dealing with the mail in order to settle your bill.

With the help of telemedicine we are able to transform the patient experience to one that is more convenient, cost-effective, and practical in today’s modern, fast-paced, and ever-changing society.

If you have any questions about our telemedicine services or would like to schedule your virtual consultation, contact us today at (732) 910-1312.

Sports Physicals

A sports physical is a necessary document to ensure your child can participate in sports both in school and recreationally. At Star Life Pediatrics, we make physicals a simple and easy process for all our patients.

What does a sports physical include?

Generally, all physicals begin with a discussion of medical and family history to establish your child’s health background. Common tests conducted during the physical include:

  • Checking heart and lung function
  • Evaluating reflexes and flexibility
  • Examining the ears, nose, and throat
  • Vision screening

We will also check other aspects of your health as needed and remind you and your child of sport safety practices to prevent injury.

Does a physical replace a well-child exam?
No, a sports physical does not replace a well-child exam. The goal of sports physicals is to make sure your child is healthy enough to participate in a sports program safely. A well-child exam is more comprehensive and includes an extensive examination of your child’s health.

Do I need to bring anything to the physical?
We recommend that parents bring any assistive devices such as corrective lenses, contacts, or oral appliances to your child’s physical.

Any forms your school requires us to complete including pre-participation forms should also be brought to the physical.

A sports physical is good for exactly one year. It is important to schedule your child’s physical before the old one expires to ensure that your child’s sports participation is not interrupted. For more information on sports physicals, please contact our office today at (732) 910-1312.

Allergies

At Star Life Pediatrics, we offer comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for those who struggle with allergies. We understand that allergies can manifest in various ways from environmental factors to food, and we offer a wide range of treatment options to help your child live comfortably.

Symptoms of Allergies
Possible signs of an allergic reaction include, but are not limited to:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Red eyes
  • Runny nose
  • Skin rashes or hives
  • Sneezing
  • Swollen face, lips, or tongue
  • Upset stomach
  • Watery eyes

In severe cases, anaphylactic shock may occur where the swelling of the throat blocks proper airflow. If this occurs, seek immediate medical attention and administer an Epi-Pen if available.

Diagnosing Allergies
Some allergy symptoms may appear to be signs of an upset stomach, cold, or flu, making it difficult to diagnose at home. If you suspect your child has an allergy, schedule an appointment with our office to confirm a diagnosis.

We will conduct a thorough allergy test, including blood work and additional skin testing if necessary. In cases where further evaluation may be needed, we can refer your child to an allergist.

Treatment
For some, careful management of allergen exposure can be enough to keep your child symptom-free. In other cases, medication may be prescribed to keep allergy symptoms under control.

For more information on our allergy treatment options, contact our office at (732) 910-1312.
